In late March 2023, in-cosmetics Global hosted nearly 11,000 attendees in Barcelona, a 33% jump year-over-year, reflecting not only a return to pre-pandemic norms but also a boom in new ingredient launches for beauty and personal care, spanning actives and functionals. Beyond the expected advancements in sustainable claims, technologies tapped into the brain-beauty axis and offered new pathways for targeted benefits. Here, we outline a range of materials that made their debut at the show.
Beauty-brain Axis
Mibelle Biochemistry’s latest launch, TiMood (INCI: Zanthoxylum alatum fruit extract (and) glycerin (and) pentylene glycol (and) aqua/water), is a neuroactive based on Himalayan timut pepper that is designed to improve both skin and emotional well-being. Per the company, the technology protects neurons from aging, supports a healthy and even skin complexion, improves well-being under stress, and stimulates the skin-brain connection.
In conversations at in-cosmetics Global in Barcelona, the company disclosed that the technology prevents the aging of sensory neurons in the skin, thereby improving the health of keratinocytes, which in turn boosts the release of dopamine. This release promotes microcirculation, enhances skin tone evenness and imparts a sense of emotional well-being.
Mibelle Biochemistry argues that skin that feels good can boost one’s mood via a visible improvement of facial appearance and unconsciously via the skin-brain axis. TiMood has been shown to improve emotional well-being in stressed volunteers, per the company, leading to a more relaxed state.
