Shin-Etsu Silicones of America, Inc. (SESA) recently showcased its sunscreen formulations at The Florida Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists 2023 Sunscreen Symposium.
At the event, SESA provided cosmetic industry professionals with insights into its latest sunscreen formulation advancements, including:
- SPD-Z7L: Fine Particle Zinc Oxide Dispersion (INCI: Zinc Oxide/Dimethicone/Polyglyceryl-3 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone Triethoxycaprylylsilane)
- SPD-T5L: Fine Particle TiO2 Dispersion (INCI: Dimethicone/Titanium Dioxide (and) Polyglyceryl-3 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone Aluminum Hydroxide/Stearic Acid)
The company's SPD series are highly concentrated dispersions of fine particles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in a volatile silicone oil (DMF-2cs Dimethicone). These products are essentially non-whitening, with a silky light skin feel and can be easily formulated into various formats, per the company.

KF-6106 (INCI: Polyglyceryl-3/Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone) was also featured. This ingredient is a polyglycerin-modified, branched silicone surfactant with outstanding powder dispersability, per the company. The unique structure helps break down the metal oxide agglomerates to allow for high active content, higher SPF and reduced whitening effect for mineral sunscreen formulations, per the company.
SESA’s KF-6106 are functional materials that help combine powders into products for applications including sunscreen, liquid makeup and lipstick.
Finally, KSG-320: Emulsifying Silicone Elastomer (INCI: Isododecane/PEG-15/Lauryl Dimethicone Crosspolymer) is an alkyl functionalized silicone cross-linked with polyether and swollen in isododecane. This product is a self-emulsifying silicone elastomer with smooth skin feel and a high degree of optical blurring, per the company.
Janine Cherette, SESA cosmetics application laboratory team leader, commented: “We recognize the importance of innovating solutions for sunscreen consumers seeking optimal aesthetic effects while providing broad spectrum SPF protection. This event was an ideal platform to showcase these new functional silicone technologies with a forward-thinking objective of providing solutions to sunscreen formulation challenges.”
