In reportedly one of the most substantial studies of a skin health supplement, a collagen/chondroitin sulfate/hyaluronic acid supplement was shown to visibly reduce signs of skin aging within 12 weeks of use.
The findings from this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial showed a measurable improvement in women's skin elasticity, crow's feet, and depth and number of fine lines and wrinkles. The study was recently published in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine.
The Study
To evaluate the supplement, 128 women, ages 39-59, presenting with visible signs of facial aging were enrolled. Participants were randomly split into a test or placebo group and over the course of 12 weeks, the test group was supplemented twice daily with BioCell Collagen 500 mg capsules composed of: hydrolyzed collagen type-II (> 300 mg), chondroitin sulfate (> 100 mg) and hyaluronic acid (> 50 mg).
Throughout the study, the test and placebo group followed a uniform, simplified skin care routine. Participants' skin was visually graded monthly to determine the intervention's efficacy, including measurements of facial lines and wrinkles, definition of crow's feet lines and wrinkles, levels of skin texture and smoothness, and skin tone.
The Results
For the 113 participants completing the study, the dietary supplementation (1g/day):
- increased skin collagen content by 12%,
- significantly reduced facial lines and wrinkles,
- reduced the width of crow's feet and wrinkles compared to the placebo,
- improved skin elasticity compared to the placebo, and
- caused no adverse reactions.
Participants surveyed at the six and twelve-week marks reported a positive perception of the supplement's effectiveness.
